Her musical career began at age 19 after signing a contract with Cinepoly Records a year after she moved to Hong Kong with her family. In 1991 she released her first debut album, The day with no patience. Although the album did well and she was becoming noticed by the public, Wong Faye felt frustrated with the start of her musical carerr and decided to take a year off. She moved to New York and spent her time there studying dancing and singing. In 1992 she returned to Hong Kong and her second album, Coming Home was released. It was a huge hit which placed her in the spotlight.
With a steady music career going well Wong Faye took up acting on the side and in 1994 she starred Wong Kar-wais, Chungking Express in which she won the award for best actress in Sweden. Her success gave her confidence to become more experimental with her music, leading to releases like "Restless".
In 1997, Wong Faye switched to EMI music company after her daughter was born. After her transition to the new company, she began to sing more songs in Mandarin than Cantonese. In addition to the change in language, many fans began to note that her music was becoming more comercialized to appease a larger population of listeners. The change seemed to pay off well though in 1999 when she was featured in a Pepsi commercial and had "Eyes on Me" featured in Final Fantasy VII.
Her career has continued to be quite successful and controversial at the same time. She has worked at fundraising concerts that benefit people who have suffered from SARS and AIDS. In 2004, she was also awarded the best female artists by Golden Melody Awards; however her comments at her acceptance speech (ie. I can sing and agree with the award panels decision) created controversy between local Taiwanese media.
