Profile

Visage was a New Romantic band that started in 1978 in a nightclub called Billy’s in London, England. The band consists of former member of Moors Murderers, Steve Strange and DJ Rusty Egan, who was former drummer with The Rich Kids. Later on, Midge Ure who was interested in working with Strange and Egan, joined. The three recorded a demo including their version of the Zager and Evans’ hit "In the Year 2525".

In 1979, Visage was signed to Radar Records after Billy Currie and three members of Magazine - bassist Barry Adamson, guitarist John McGeoch and keyboard player Dave Formula, joined the band. They released Tar in September the same year.

Their self-titled debut album was released the following year and it contained the song, Fade to Grey, which became a club hit and went to No.1 in twenty-one countries. It was the beginning of a breakthrough for electronic music and New Romantic movement.

Mind of Toy was released soon after and it was a Top 40 hit but in 1982, the release of the Anvil had disappointing sales and Visage began to disintegrate. Formula and Currie left the band and Visage released their final album Beat Boy.

Steve Strange re-launched the band in the millennium. Joining him was Steven Young, Sandrine Gouriou and Rosie Harris and Ross Tregenza. The band worked on old remixes and as well as new demos. Fade to Grey was eventually released by a Dutch jungle group, Noisia. Best of DVD from Universal Records was released in 2006 and the band is working on new materials.

Thoughts

I was a bit disapointed by Visage. The music is very simple and rather generic. In addition, the vocals sound horrible when he tries to sing harshly.
