With a style as interesting as their sound, Sugar have certainly done well since their formation in 2004. This year saw the release of their mini-album "Grave of Mind" and a successful two-man tour with emmuree.

JMI was recently given the chance to interview the band.




Firstly, thank you for doing this interview. Why is the band called Sugar?

I think that when we started the band there was a sweet and heavy atmosphere and at that time, we immediately thought of the name "Sugar"

When did you begin playing music?

Loki: By the time I’d reached the age of discretion, I had already been singing.
SIZNA: 15 years old.
Koto: 17 years old.
Atsuto: 16 years old (I started with the guitar).

How do you think your music has changed since forming Sugar?

I don’t think it’s changed that much, fundamentally. However, because we always want higher quality, we’ll probably grow and change in that respect.

What/who are your inspirations when writing songs?

SIZNA writes most of the music but all the members arrange it and so the songs are constructed in a way that suits each of their feelings. Although Loki writes all the lyrics, when he writes them, they take on the shape of his feelings.

Sugar’s look is also interesting. Who designs your clothes?

First of all Loki shows us the image and then each member’s opinions are taken into account and then we have a lot of meetings with the clothes makers.

What’s your favourite Sugar song?

Loki: "Dokuhaku"
SIZNA: "Togajin no sora" (mental sketch modified)
Koto: "Hakujitsu ni idakareta ashiki kage"
Atsuto: "Hakujitsu ni idakareta ashiki kage"

What’s important when writing songs?

They have to have something all the members like and they we have to be able to perform them live, and we aim for higher quality. And also, something that makes the fans who listen to them have a deeper understanding of Sugar.

Which artists have you been influenced by?

Loki: All the people who I thought was good.
SIZNA: Eric Johnson
Koto: A lot of artists
Atsuto: A lot of artists

Are there any artists you want to work with?

Loki: Marilyn Manson
SIZNA: I want to develop an effector with Eric Johnson
Koto: Hajime Okano (producer)
Atsuto: Hyde (L’arc~en~ciel)

Why is the title of your mini-album "Grave of Mind"?

We had, to some degree, become stable as Sugar, and became conscious of this. We thought that at this point, we left a marker and this title was chosen,

Does "Grave of Mind" have a specific theme?

As mentioned above, it’s looking back on the things we’ve done until now.

Recently, you did a 2-man tour with emmuree. How was it?

Loki: It was fun and I learnt various things.
SIZNA: Pairing with emmuree at each live was fun. And I’d like to do it again if we can.
Koto: It was really enjoyable.
Atsuto: It was interesting.

Was there been any particularly memorable lives?

Loki: 08.25.2005 Sugar’s 1st ONEMAN
SIZNA: When I had some trouble with my guitar, the live that followed from the other three was good.
Koto: 08.25.2005 1st ONEMAN
Atsuto: Not especially, because every one of them is important.

Would you like to play lives overseas?

If we have the chance, of course we want to.

Which do you prefer: recording or lives?

Loki: Lives, because you can feel the reactions from the fans directly.
SIZNA: Absolutely lives...because you can express things directly to the fans.
Koto: I prefer lives.
Atsuto: Lives

What are your future plans?

Loki: In a positive way, we might not change because we’re good as we are, but we’ll continue to improve.
SIZNA: World tour
Koto: To start activities overseas
Atsuto: I think that we’ll make better music, but that doesn’t mean we’ll change.

Could you give a message to your fans?
