Profile
Consisting of Masahiro Nakai, Kimura Takuya, Kusanagi Tsyoshi, Inagaki Goro and Katori Shingo, this five people make up SMAP, a very
famous Japanese pop band under Johnny & Associates which was formed in 1988. Former member was Katsuyuki Mori, who eventually left the
group to pursue his racing career in May 1996. The groups official debut was in 1991, releasing Cant Stop!!-LOVING- on September 9.
The band did not get a lot of attention when they first started out but as time went, their popularity gained and in 1993, they finally
had a hit single released on November 11, 1992 titled Egao no GENKI, The song was used for the opening them of drama Asunaro Hakusho
starring one of their members, Kimura Takuya. In 1994, their song, Kimi Iro Omoi, was used for the opening of the anime Akazukin Cha
Cha.
SMAP has their own variety show, SMAP X SMAP, which is one of the most well-known variety programs in Japan. Three of their singles
titled Yozora no Mukou, Lion Heart and the very famous Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana, have sold for more than two million copies. It
was truly amazing. Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana was ranked #1 on the Oricon Top 100 Yearly Singles in 2003. Altogether, SMAP has
release over thirty singles throughout the groups history. Their latest single released on October 11 this year titled, Arigatou, was
the groups 40th single. Outside of SMAP, individual members are also busy with their own projects. Nakai, the leader of the pack, even
though he is known to be a bad singer, he is a host in Utaban, another variety program. Kimura Takuya had acted in various dramas such
as Beautiful Life, Pride and Hero. He also modeled and was the pin up boy for Levis jeans. Inagaki Goro has his own show called Goros
Bar and also acts in dramas such as Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteiru. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, known to be fluent in speaking Korean has acted
in Japanese and Korean movies such as Yomigaeri and the recent Sinking of Japan and lastly, the youngest member, Katori Shingo
sometimes dressed up as Shingo Mama and has acted in Saiyuki.

Thoughts
What do you expect from a boy band? They sing like all other boy bands do. Though the vocals are hardly average, SMAP definitely has a
lot of fun songs that are really easy to listen to and each song gets stuck to your head pretty easily as well. Its good to be
listening to their songs during intervals when your ears are tired of listening to too much J-Metal or Rock songs. If you have not
listened to them before, I would highly recommend you to try out Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana, Dear Woman, Fly and their recent
single, Arigatou. Slow tracks like Its A Wonderful World, Triangle, Lion Heart and Eric Claptons Say What You Will, are very
soothing.
