Profile

Sigh is Japan’s most well-known black metal band and also one of the most experimental. This is highly evident in their trangression from their earlier works, which is highly black/death metal, to their later works which add in keyboards and classical influences. Their latest release, even, is their most experimental album to date! Gallows Gallery, their newest release, is a power/heavy metal album with jazz and classical influences. I have yet to hear any band make good use of saxophones in metal. This is also not to mention the alledged "sonic weapons experimentation" in gallows Gallery.

Led by the bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Mirai Kawashima, the band formed in 1989 with Statoshi Fujinami on guitar and Kazuki on drums. Their earlier works mixed in horror movie sountracks atmospheres and keyboard/synthesizer arrangements.

After some demos, they recording their first ER, Reuiem for the Fols in 1992. Kazuki had left around this point. Scorn Defeat, their first full-length album, came out in 1993 and was the first recording including guitarist Shinichi Ishikawa and Satoshi on drums.

With their lineup finally solidified, the trio signed to England’s Cacophonous Records, where they released their next three full-lengths: Infidel Art (1995), Hail Horror Hail (1997), and Scenario IV: Dread Dreams (1999); a mini-CD, Ghastly Funeral Theatre, also came out on Cacophonous in 1997. Over the course of these albums, Sigh steadily incorporated more diverse elements into their sound, including pianos, female choirs, classically inspired orchestrations, non-horror movie soundtrack touches, and unexpected mood/style changes. After Scenario IV? Sigh left the Cacophonous label for Century Media, which released the band’s fifth full-length Imaginary Sonicscape, in the summer of 2001.

Thoughts

Sigh is a interesting band. There music is very good! Its a bit similar to other metal bands like Sex Machineguns. As far as vocals go though, this band is really hard core. The vocals sound a lot like screaming. I feel like giving the singer a cough drop ^ ^! One other dissapointing thing about the vocals is that they are too overwhelmed by the background music so its hard to hear the lyrics clearly. If you’re a hard core metal fan, you may/may not like them.
