Profile

Sabbat, not to be confused with Sabbat in the UK, formed in Kuwana in 1983 under the original name EVIL with Gezol, Ozny, Elizaveat, Valvin, and Toshiya. With the exception of Ozny, the other members had been playing together since 1981 in high school bands like Black Beast, Hot Rod, and Aburamushi. The band began playing melodic speed metal and renamed the band SABBAT after Toshiya left. Their style changed quite a bit when they debuted with the demo "Sabbat" in 1985. From then they moved on to a much harsher black/thrash approach with the 1987 release "Born by Evil Blood".

In 1986, Sabbat was busy playing lives and even performed at Under The Castle, which was broadcasted on TV. Everything seemed to be going well until they performed in Tokyo. After a performance, Ozny assaulted a guy who had given him the finger during the show. As a result, the band had to play without Ozny. Ozny would only play with the band once more, before leaving the band. The band was set back yet again with the death of a family member close to Gezol and Samm. As a result the two decided to stop playing live and a farewell show was played in Nagoya with a small audience of only 43 fans.

In October of 1988, the band was back in the studio again recording songs for their next release titled "Desecration". The band began to gain popularity outside of Japan and they occasionally played a few live performances.

Over the years, the band has become increasingly popular and also changed their line up a few times. They have toured Europe and released a few cds through European labels like Primitive Art Productions. They are currently with Heavy Metal Superstar Records.

Thoughts

Sabbat are very good blackened thrash metal. From the members who also formed Metalucifer there's little to expect but brilliance. This band is for anyone who is a fan of thrash metal at all.
