PMX 2006 Concert

By akfgfan

Overview:

PMX is a rather new anime convention that just celebrated its third year in business. Although rather unknown, they have been able to bring over big stars like T.M. Revolution, Nami Tamaki, Psycho le Cemu, and Olivia to perform in the states. This year PMX held two seperate concerts: one on Saturday, October 28th and another on Sunday, October 29th. This is a review of the concert from the 28th, which starred Olivia.

The concert started off rather ackwardly, running an hour behind schedule. Attendees were finally able to get seated at the time that the concert was actually supposed to start. I was surprised and rather pleased though when I saw Olivia’s family and friends at the concert. It was nice to see family members cheering her on for her first U.S. performance. After more delays from the staff, the concert finally began with two opening bands: Uchuu Sentai NOIZ and Dig Jelly.

Uchuu Sentai NOIZ:

Uchuu Sentai NOIZ started off the night with some great energy! At the beginning, each band member introduced their self with a unique set of action moves that are reminscent of old animes (ie. Dragon Ball Z, Power Rangers, Sailor Moon to name a few). After introducing themselves as from another world, they then opened with some incredible songs!

Since they were the first band of the night, many fans formed a mosh pit in front of the stage. Some of the fans went a bit overboard with their dancing, but overall the mood was great! Uchuu Sentai NOIZ introduced some fun dance moves to their song Chromosome 6 and got a lot of fan participation!

After a few songs, their vocalist Angel-Taka thanked PMX and also made some hilarious comments as best as he could in English. They then continued with some more upbeat songs. Overall, I was incredibly impressed with their performance. They were incredible entertainers that really energized the crowd!

Songs Featured in the Performance:
-Introduction- Chromosome 6
Miracle Rocket G5
Cry
Battle Capsule Ai wo Komete

Dig Jelly:

After Uchuu Sentai NOIZ, the most controversal band of the evening, Dig Jelly, took the stage. Dig Jelly is an American band influenced by Japanese media. Their music was a great mix of hard rock and metal. The vocalist performed very well too, showing off her vocal versatility. Much of the audience was so enthralled with them that they asked for an encore.

So you are probably wondering, "What was controversal about this band?" For starters, the vocalists costume bordered between clothing and lingerie. Her skirt was so short that you could see her underwear and he chest showed a lot of cleavage. In addition to this, PMX allowed the band to perform 10 songs! For an opening band, it was a bit too much. The audience members that did not enjoy them began to quietly remark that they had paid for Olivia’s concert, not a concert for Dig Jelly. Overall, Dig Jelly was a decent band; however, the costumes and a lack of command from PMX made this performance sweet and sour.

Songs Featured in the Performance:
Deal
Faka Laka Rocksta
Aristocracy
Losing Grace
Slam
Time is Up
Killing in the Name of - by Rage Against the Machine (encore)

Olivia:

Fifeteen minutes before the concert was originally scheduled to end, it was finally Olivia’s turn to take the stage! She opened with the songs Sea Me and Fake Flowers. She then introduced herself, as well as the band. It was refreshing to watch her as she continued her performance. Unlike the previous two bands, she glowed with confidence and experience. Her moves on stage were smooth and natural. Her voice was also as extroidinary live as it is in recording.

Her tracklist included many of her older songs from her loli days. She also performed Wish, Starless Night, and A Little Pain which had been featured in the anime Nana. Olivia announced that she plans to release a new mini album sometime around December 2006. She will also continue to produce songs for the Nana anime until December 2007.

Her performance ended with the song Spider Spins and she encored with Devil’s In Me. The end of the performance was extroidinary and full of energy. It left much of the crowd wanting more!

After the last track, the PMX staff surprised attendees with an announcement. Anyone that had paid for 2 most expensive sections would have the chance to attend an autograph session with Olivia immediately after the concert! Only forty minutes was alloted to the special signing, and over one hundred people waited in line to see Olivia. It gave the concert a perfect ending!
