Review:
Mika Nakashima has always been a rather unique singer with soft poppy songs with hints of jazz here and there. This mini album is quite a departure from what she usually does, with heavy usage of guitar, drums and bass. Not that a change of pace is always a bad thing, but it seems to be a case of hit or miss when it comes to this album. While some songs shine like the Title track "GLAMOROUS SKY" others get close but ultimately miss their mark. Overall I find it to be a bit too expensive when many singles nowadays are this long and cost almost half the price as this.
Track Listing
1. GLAMOROUS SKY [4:26] - 8/10
First impressions are always the most important. This song starts out poorly, the guitar and drums mask up Nakashima's soft and beautiful voice, which, in the beginning seems monotone and boring. Then the chorus hits, the energy gets kicked up and everything clicks. This is when the vocals begin to shine just as much as the guitars do.
2. MY MEDICINE [3:38] - 6.5/10
I would rate this song as simply "okay". There seems to be something off about it. The way Nakashima sing out "my medicine" doesn't seem to mesh with the rest of the song. The chorus is arguably the most memorable part of a song but in this case it seems merely to throw off the balance.
3. BLOOD [4:26] - 9/10
Starting harsh and intimidating with aggressive guitars the intro to BLOOD is rather decieving. Soon after the guitars have their way a simple drum beat is laid down as Nakashima begins to sing in her normal melodious way. The chorus begins and in come the guitars again supplementing the vocals. Overall this is my personal favorite of this album.
4. ISOLATION [4:45] - 6/10
This song seems to be the most boring of all 4 songs. Even MY MEDICINE had a liveliness and interest within it. There isn't much to this song, the mood is mellow yet nothing stands out to distinguish it. This song is the most mediocre, bland and forgettable off of the cd.
5. GLAMOROUS SKY (Instrumental) [4:26] - 8/10
Instrumental version of the song is rather good on its own.
6. MY MEDICINE (Instrumental) [3:38] - 7/10
Not much to say here really. These tracks are usually here for Karaoke anyways.
