Review
Wow, this is one amazing EP. I had heard about them on Japan Live and thought I would check them out. And now Im glad I did. This is one solid alternative rock EP. The vocals are very similar to those of Ooki Nobuo of Acidman and the transitions are so unexpected like Asian Kung-fu Generation. Their style could also be compared to a more pop version of Eastern Youth.
The first track, "Plankton", starts off slow and it sounds like this is going to be some pop record. Its just vocals and a piano. But then the drums and bass come out of nowhere. It starts to speed up and up and up and the guitar joins in creating one amazing and crazy song.
"Potofu", the second track, sounded similar to Acidman or a slower AKG song with great guitar and bass coordination. The third track, "Yoake no Maigo Tachi", starts out slow, something like an acoustic ballad, but at the middle part of the song, out of nowhere, it becomes a very loud and fast-paced song, but then back to a more chill song.
The fifth track, "No Beatles" (do they not like the Beatles? or do they not like beatles?), is probably my favorite track on the album (either that or the opening). Its a really solid alternative song that will get you thinking about all of those college rock bands from the 90s.
Overall, this is one great EP. The vocals are very good, and Mothercoat is just one solid alternative/ powerpop band that Im surprised hasnt hit the mainstream in Japan. Theyre definitely for fans of Acidman or Asian Kung-fu Generation, or if youre just looking for a good alternative band to listen to.
