Review
First things first: I am not that big of a Straightener fan. Their title album never really took me like I wanted it to and their music I immediatley dubbed "average". But when I got the chance to get this cD/DVD of the straightener songs I did like I jumped at the chance.
I had only heard a previous mix of killer tune(the one on their "Title" album) and had seen the PV so I was fairly familiar with the song already. I think the instrument that stands out the most in this song is the very intersting bass line that follows through most of the song. It made the song alot of fun to listen. The chorus is excellent as well and the song as a whole is accompanied by a clever lyric pattern(all in English). This wasnt your typical stragihtener though, and I think it plays a big reason on why I actually like the song so much. The song isnt as emo(Im sorry for the word but it was coming up, you just knew it) as many of other straighteners songs. Still, probably the biggest buying point for the CD itself.
Play the star Guitar is another single I had heard on the Title album and I liked the song very much. It has your typical straightener music in there with the bonus of having the "part-English" chorus. The chorus was really the part of the song I really liked, and how the verse built up to it each time. The song itself is rather average in my opinion, and is what I can expect from a straightener single.
Songs aside, the bonus Live DVD at Liquid room Ebisu that was included was pretty entertaining too. I had no idea what most of the songs they played were but I was tapping my foot along for the breif moments a song was portrayed. It also showed me how great of a band straightener was live, playing with all the energy and not for a moment stopping to consider anything else except their own instrument(and perhaps the crowd). The picture quality and the sound was recorded extremely well, and each song was completely audible and the picture wasnt blurred at all and well lit for a Live House setting. The biggest flaw was that the DVD is only 7 minutes, and only has about a minute or two of each of the 5 songs. It was decent enough for me though Im not sure how a Straightener fan will take it.
Also included on the CD was a bonus CD-Extra of Killer Tune in the studio. The clip is of Straightener in the studio basically messing around playing Killer Tune, and was really hilarious. You get this whether or not you get the DVD version or not, so its defintely something youll want to watch after you listen to the songs.
Killer Tune/Play the star Guitar is a single youd get because of the mass amount of Bonus content more then anything else. Though the DVD edition is sold out on cdjapan its list price is only 1,240yen, making it not only affordable but extremely cheap for something with this much entertainment in it when compared to your average 3 track single. Its defintely a good idea to pick this one up if you can find it for the list price. Its a great addition to your collection and I think its a pretty decent release to pick up if you just got into straightener. On a side note Im not so sure my opinion would be this good If I was reviewing the regular edition, no DVD included for about 800yen. Its still something to pick up if you find it, so it gets a prett decent recommend.
