Review
"The Cloudy Dreamer" is Olivia Lufkins latest mini album. Highly anticipated by fans, the mini album includes two songs ["A Little Pain" and "Wish" (English version)] featured on the anime series Nana and "Dream Catcher" from the series Jigoku Shojo. Overall, I found the mini-album to be very reminiscent of Olivias old style. Several of the songs featured have an experimental pop sound accompianed with beautiful lyrics in Japanese and English. Unlike some of Olivias past releases though, every song featured has a very catchy melody that will appeal to a large audience.
Track Listing
1. If You Only Knew - 8/10
A very beautiful and quiet song. Olivias voice is the highlight of this song, as she shows off her incredible range. This song also starts off the mini album quite well with lyrics that tie into "Cloudy Dreamers" theme.
2. Stars Shining Out - 9/10
This song is Olivias most recent work and was featured on a PV to advertise for the mini album. It has a great driving beat, but the lyrics become repetitive after a few listens.
3. Dream Catcher - 8/10
Nice song with a strong chorus. It isnt as upbeat as some of the other songs featured, but will keep your interest.
4. Whos Gonna Stop It? - 9/10
A very unusually rockish song for Olivia. "Whos Gonna Stop It?" has a great upbeat rhythm that builds up nicely to the climax of the chorus. The lyrics fit well, discussing the wish to stop fighting and just love ones lover.
5. Cloudy World - 10/10
This song is really well done. It has a very catchy melody and lyrics that will leave you wanting to sing along. I wouldnt be surprised if the title of this mini album was inspired by this song.
6. Cut Me Free - 7/10
This is perhaps the darkest song on the mini album in terms of its lyrics. Olivias vocals are matched with an eerie piano melody in the background, that keeps you listening intently. A little strange, but well done.
7. Wish (English Version) - 10/10
If you are a fan of the original "Wish" from Nana, then you will love this version too. All of the original music was left the same. The only big difference is that the lyrics of this song are all in English. At the beginning of the song, you can hear Olivia holding out some of the lyrics to make them match the melody. However, once you get to the first chorus the rest of the lyrics are sung very smoothly. Overall, Olivia did a good job converting this song into English.
8. A Little Pain - 10/10
"A Little Pain" is a very beautiful ballad! The songs lyrics were a perfect match for the series Nana, and are very easy to relate to if you have ever been in love before.
