Review

"BAD! BAD! BAD! " marks ketchup mania’s 6th major single since their formation in 1999. Known for having classic punk pop/rock songs, "BAD! BAD! BAD! " does not disappoint! The single features three tracks, ranging from two to three minutes in length. Although the lenth of the songs is a bit short, the energy put into each one is incredible. Shall we start with track one?

The single is titled after the first track "BAD! BAD! BAD! ". Hiro introduces the track by repeating the title several times. After about twenty seconds of repetition, the single breaks into song featuring a combination of Japanese and English lyrics. Hiro’s vocals are by far the highlight, leading the song in several playful melodies. Wani reiterates her melodies on the drums, adding emphasis to the three notes "BAD! BAD! BAD! ". Overall, this track is by far my favorite. The playful nature and emphasis on drums highlight the lyrics in a spectacular way.

The second track "YES FREEDOM YES MY LIFE", is unfortunately only two minutes and seventeen seconds long. It has an energetic upbeat that is maintained throughout the song. There is little deviation instrumentally, placing heavy emphasis only on Hiro’s vocals. The lack of deviation makes this track a bit repetitive and boring to listen to after the first minute. If they had spent more time working on parts for the guitar, bass, and drums, I think this track would be greatly improved. By far, it is the weakest track on the single.

The last track is titled "PINK WATER". This track takes on a rock n’ roll feel with a heavy bass and guitar beat. Halfway through the song, a new melody is formed and is driven by a jubilee of electronic effects. The break in melody adds more depth to the song and grabs your attention. Out of all of the songs featured, this one by far shows the most creativity with the instruments and melodies. The rock theme provides a new avenue for the band, and shows off their versatility. This is a great track!
