Rei Harakami was born in Hiroshima, Japan. He first gained an interest in music technology when listening to the band YMO as a teenager. Later on, he worked as a commercial musician for television, asked to create techno-oriented music ocassionally. In turn, this helped him familiarize himself with the electronica/techno genre. After being further influenced by techno artists such as Aphex Twins and the Orb, he decided to create his own music.

After sending a demo tape to a record company in 1996, Rei released his debut album in 1998 under the Sublime Records label. Following up with well-produced albums ’O*PAQ’ (1999) and Red Curb (2001), he steadily began to earn the recognition of numerous music scenes out there for his unique sound and his producing skills. When he released 4th album, ’[lust]’, received almost instant worldwide attention and has made him a venerated musician.

In the international spotlight, Rei has been part of many music showcases located in France and Germany. He also appeared in Barcelona, Spain alongside Shiro Takatani for "Sonar 2005". Today, Rei is known for regularly attending some of Japan’s biggest music festivals such as "Fuji Rock Festival", "sonar sound tokyo", and "RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL".

Today, Rei Harakami resides in Kyoto, Japan and has just finished composing music for the movie, "Ten nen Kokkeko".

Thoughts

Rei’s music has a very interesting and beautiful sound. His music ranges from incredibly relaxing with echoes and soothing piano, from happy and futuristic with cheerful robot-like beeps. It reminds me of the kind of music that would be in videogames like Super Mario or Animal Crossing. Definately a good thing to listen to if you’re in the mood for something soft yet happy.
