Born in Seoul on June 25, 1982 as Jeong Ji-Hoon, he is popularly known as Rain or Bi. Dubbed as the Usher of Asia, Rain is on of Korea’s top singer whose popularity spreads throughout the whole of Asia. Despite his dancing ability, Rain had been rejected at various auditions in his early career as he was told that he was ugly because he does not have double eyelids. His audition was finally accepted by JYP Entertainment.

Rain’s debut album, Bad Guy, in 2002, was a massive success. He starred in a drama, Sang Doo! Let’s Go To School and later on released How to Avoid the Sun in 2003, his second studio album. He acted in another drama, Full House, the following year. The drama was the highest-rated of all time as they receive 30% viewer-ship for every episode and was aired in other countries such as Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore China and Japan. He won the Best Actor Award at the KBS Acting Awards.

Rain’s third album, It’s Raining, was sold over one million copies around Asia. In 2005, he won various awards such as the Favourite Korean Artist at MTV Asia Aid in Bangkok, Most Popular Asian Artist from Channel [V] Thailand, Best Buzz Asia during MTV Japan Video Music Awards and Best Korean Singer in MTV-CCTV Mandarin Music Honors in Beijing. Rain also was the first Asian Artist to be invited to perform for American MTV Video Music Awards in Miami and at MTV Latin Music Awards in Mexico.

Rain is so popular that all tickets to his concerts were quickly snapped within minutes after they went on sale. Rain’s World, which is his fourth album, was released on October 14 this year; consist of hits like I’m Coming and In My Bed. He is currently on his Rain’s Coming Tour.

Thoughts

Rain has a soft but smooth voice which really suits him singing R&B songs. He is not only a good singer; he is a really good dancer too. I’m not a fan of pop and R&B singer but Rain is an exception. It is nothing about the look or the image, but it is all because of the voice. Songs like I Do and I’m Coming are groovy and enjoyable to listen to. Slow tracks like Cassiopeia, which is a duet with Lim Jeong Hee, is one of the best I’ve heard. His latest album was certainly not a let down. I would highly recommend you to listen to him.
