Profile

Claiming to be manufactured "Psycho Dolls", Cyberpunk/industrial goth band Psydoll formed in Tokyo in 1997. In this first year they released their first album, "Illumidia", and established a fanbase that they played to in various clubs and live houses around Tokyo.

Psydoll released four more albums over the next 6 years; "Psyberdoll" in 1998, "Lake/Rose, Rose, Rose" in 1999, "The Daughter of Dr. Neumann" in 2000 and "A War In The Box" in 2002 and a single, "Fragments" in 2003.

In 2003, the band also travelled to the UK to perform at the "Beyond the Veil" gothic music festival in Leeds and this gained them some fans from the UK industrial and gothic scenes. They also returned to the UK later in the year for a mini-tour of Scotland and North England. Whilst there, Psydoll signed to the label "Planet Ghost Music" and they released "I, Psydoll", their first release available outside Japan, in 2004 as well as a Japan only single "Sign".

In 2005 the band again returned to the UK for a mini-tour. The maxi single "Stories" was also released in 2005.

2006 saw more lives in Japan for Psydoll, including some at Shinjuku URGA and Shibuya Aoi-heya and they also carried out another UK tour. The band also appeared in the German magazine "Astan" and Nekoi was a guest on web TV show "Tokyo Goth Lolic Night", hosted by SiSeN and The Velvet TeU.

Psydoll have again been playing live shows around Tokyo and Nagoya in 2007, with dates including Nagoya Music Farm and Shinjuku Head Power.

Thoughts

Psydoll have an interesting sound. The music is at times aggressive, but also melodic and Nekoi’s voice sound sometimes sweet and innocent, sometimes cold and these contrasts work together well. If you like softer electro-industrial gothic rock, you’ll probably like Psydoll. Well worth listening to!
