Profile

Pizzicato Five started out with 5 members: Konishi Yasuharu,Takanami Keitaro, Kamonomiya Akira, Sasaki Mamiko and Miyata Shigeo. Not long after the group formed Miyata left Pizzicato Five. They release their first 12" single called the AUndrey Hepburn Complex in 1985 and then signed on to Sony Records.

Their first album, "Couples" was a commercial failure. Sony pressured the group to find a new singer, and memebers Sasaki and Kamonomiya left and were replaced by Tajima Takan. They released 3 more albums with Takajima before he left to work with his own band. This time, Nomiya Maki took the lead vocalist position. The also signed to Triad Records.

This change led to a new direction of Pizzicato five, and ultimately got them the popularity they needed. They had now set up a sound that would help bring foward the Shibuya-kei scene in Japan. Their song "Sweet soul revue" was used for an adveritsing campaign and became a smash hit. They also submitted other songs to Tv drama’s or commercials. They released their album "Bossa Nova 2001" in 1993. It was produced by the famed Shibuya kei musician Corenlius and reached no. 7 on record charts.

Pizzicato Five made their debut in the Us on Matador Records in 1994. However, Keitaro left the band before their "overdose" album was released, leaving Pizzicato Five a 2 person group. They toured America and Europe that year to promote their Matador relaese.

The group released more albums overseas and in Japan in the years after 1995. They also signed to a new label, (readymade) records and continued to release some of their latest Japanese albums in the US.

By 2001 the successful Pizzicatto Five had decided to quit and saw the release of the album "Ca et la du Japon" followed by two best hits albums. They concluded with Live events, some featuring old members of the group.

Pizzicato Five has also made contributions to movie soundtrakcs on popular films like Austin power’s Gold member and Tv shows like Futarama. Their vocalist, Nomiya Maki contributed a song to the soundtrack of We <3 Katamari and key band member Konishi produced the game "Beatmania: the sound of Tokyo" for the popular playstaion/arcade series.

Thoughts

I found Pizzicato Five to be a rather odd, funky band. Their music has a 70’s sound to it. Sometimes its accompanied by orchestras, and other times by electronic equipment and sounds. It makes the music very interesting to listen to.
