The Pillows formed in 1989 with Sawao, Manabe, Shin and Kenji. The Pillows got their name from a poster Manabe owned that was the cover art for Cherry Red Records "Pillows and Prayers" compilation album. They released their first cd titled "Pantomime" in 1990. Unfortunately, only two years later Kenji left the band to become a music producer.In 1999, The Pillows was approached by Gainax (an anime studio). Gainax wanted to use their songs for an anime titled FLCL. The Pillows agreed and also composed two new singles for the anime. When FLCL was released in the US in 2002, The Pillows started to become incredibly popular with the anime’s fans. They took a short break afterwards, and regrouped in 2003 with the release "Penalty Life".
In 2005, The Pillows went on their first US tour. They performed in cities such as New York, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
