NEWS is on of the boy bands from Johnny & Associates which produced various other popular groups and duos such as SMAP, V6, Kinki Kids, Tackey & Tsubasa and lots more. This nine member band consists of leader of the group Yamashita Tomohisa also known as Yamapi, Nishikido Ryo, Uchi Hiroki, Koyama Keiichiro, Masuda Takahisa, Kato Shigeaki, Tegoshi Yuya, Kusano Hironori and Moriuchi Takahiro. The group released their first single, NEWS Nippon, in 2003, was a limited edition which was available at Seven Eleven stores. Their second single, Kibou ~Yell~, was released a year later and it was debuted at #1 in the Oricon charts. NEWS then became an eight member band as Moriuchi Takahiro left Johnny’s Entertainment.

All of NEWS’ singles, NEWS Nippon, Kibou ~Yell~, Akaku Moyuru Taiyou, Cherish, TEPPEN and Sayaendo/Hadashi no CINDERELLA BOY, has reached the #1 spot on the Oricon charts for six times in a row. They then released their first album, touch, on April 27, 2005. Projects for NEWS are put on hold since May 2006 and individual members are known to be involved in other projects.

Yamapi is currently with promotional group, Kitty GYM, together with Golf and Mike of Thailand. His solo album, Daite Senorita, was released on May 31, 2006 was #1 on the Oricon album charts and he has acted in various dramas such as Nobuta wo Produce. Ryo is also a member of Kanjini8 and released an album and two singles this year with the group. He has acted in dramas such as Ichi Rittoru no Namida and he has his own radio and television show. Masuda and Tegoshi are now working under the name Tegomass which recently released a single which is available only in Sweden. While the members are still continuing their singing projects, other members, Koyama and Shigeaki pursued only in acting. Both are currently still studying and have acted in various dramas. Shigeaki has acted in Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru together with Inagaki Goro of SMAP.

But NEWS fans need not worry as it is expected that the group will be returning in 2007!!!

Update: As expected, NEWS has been revived! Uchi Hiroki and Kusano Hironori are no longer with the band. The good news is that their first new single, "Hoshi wo Mezashite", will be released March 21, 2007.

Thoughts

A group of cute boys singing cute songs - such a cute band. This was my first impression of NEWS. Most of their songs sounded rather boyish and the vocals are very average. Despite that, their songs such as TEPPEN and Kibou ~Yell~ proved to be fun and enjoyable to listen to. I’m not a boy band lover but I still enjoy listening to them. My one and only favourite song from them would be Akaku Moyuru Taiyou. If you are a fan of V6, Arashi and KAT-TUN, then you will love NEWS.
