Profile

Mononofu was formed in February 2004 by drummer KAZUWO and vocalist NECROLAND PANDEMONIUM. The two soon decided that the names were too strange and renamed themselves. KAZUWO renamed himself Kazumune "Bonten-maru" Date after the samurai Masamune Date, whom he respected, and PANDEMONIUM renamed himself Yoshihisa "Minbu-Shouyuu" Amago after his ancestor Yukihisa Amago. They were joined in May 2004 by bassist Yamigiri "Chuu-Nagon" Ukita (whose name at the time was DARKMIST).

After the departure of Kazumune in September, the band became inactive until 2005, when Yamigiri and Yoshihisa released the demo "Imitation sound source." Guitarist Shinpei "Kunai-Shouyuu" Chousokabe and drummer Haruhisa "Sakon-Shougen" Kumon, both of whom named themselves after generals, joined in July and September, respectively. Haruhisa left in December, however, due to scheduling disagreements, and Kazumune returned to play support drums.

Well-known thrash metal guitarist Warszawa "U-daijin" Toyotomi (then called WARSZAWA) joined the band in January 2006, followed by drummer Mitsuhiro "Nai-Daijin" Shimazu once Kazumune left again in February.

The band released two demos in 2006: "Give me 7 defects and 8 agonies" in May and "Isolated Castle" in June. They also performed at Club Vijon simultaneous to the release of "Isolated Castle."

Yamigiri left the band in June and was replaced by Katsuchika "Gyoubu-Shouyuu" Togashi. Because of the gap between Yamigirifs departure and Katsuchikafs arrival, there is no bass recorded in "Isolated Castle."

Each band member changed his name to reflect the bandfs samurai spirit; most of them were inspired by military men or the band memberfs ancestor. The names in quotations and parenthesis represent the memberfs position in samurai battle formation.

Thoughts

As I’ve said many times, Japan often has terrible, laughable black metal vocals, but rarely is that so when it comes to their music. Mononofu is a blackened death/thrash metal band with good riffs and a good drummer. When it comes to death/thrash, they are not as brutal as Zombie Ritual, but the blackened tremolo parts do add a nice change to the music. Nothing abnormally spectacular, overall, but they shouldn’t disappoint.
