After studying at Tokyo University, Kenji studied music at Shobi Music Academy, however he dropped out after 1/2 a a year. After this, Kawai and a few of his friends formed the band Muse, which was dedicated to ‘fusion rock’ in order to enter a contest, and they won! Afterwords, the band disbanded. Now, Kenji Kawai has a formidable track record as an anime and horror music composer. He started by recording music for the Japanese radio actor Yuji Mitsuya, and then he met musical director Naoko Asari, who recommended he compose soundtracks for animes. His works include: Ghost in the Shell, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Mezame no Hakobune, Patlabor, Avalon, and Vampire Princess Miyu. He often collaborates with director Mamoru Oshii. He also collaborated in the popular game Silent Hill III.Derlanger
Thoughts
Kenji Kawai is a very talented and unique composer. He has composed both instrumental and vocal pieces with much success. He is very fearless in his composition, combining elements that may sound aweful alone but when accompianed by an instrument sound wonderful.
