Profile

Born in Tokyo Japan and winner of the Grand Prix of Jazz Disc (1984) and Nanri Fumio (1991) awards, guitarist, composer and producer Kazumi Watanabe gained an interest in traditional jazz as a young teen. Taken under the wings of Sadanori Nakamure, Kazumi began studying the electric guitar.

In 1971 he made his solo debut with his first album INFINITE which dubbed him a guitar prodigy with a promising career. In 1979 along side fellow musicians Ryuichi Sakamoto, Akiko Yano and Shuichi Murakami, he formed the legendary band of all stars titled KLYN. The creation of the band made an enormous impact on the music scene of Japan. Later that same year after participating in the succesful world tour, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kazumi’s name alone became nationally recognized.

During the 1980’s he built up a reputation as a precursor of jazz-fusion, thanks in part to his number one hit TOCHIKA.

With previous performances throughout America and Asia in the 1980’s, Kazumi performed throughout Europe between 1991 and 1997. During this time he released recorded works from his performance at The Bottom Line in New York which were later released on DVD. And became a guest proffesor teaching jazz at Senzoku Gakuen College.

Annual polls done by Swing Journal had Kazumi chosen 24 times as Best Jazzman. A unique composor who created his own musical universe.

Proving the realm of possibilities, in 2001 Kazumi celebrated his 30th anniversary by presenting Suite for Guitar. A compostion which showcased his challenges with various instruments including his cherished fretboard, electric guitar, ethnic guitars and an instrument in which he explored in the 1990’s, the acoustic guitar.

He still continues to this day to break down the walls of musical genres with his willingness and determination.

Thoughts

Kazumi Watanabe is a good jazz guitarist. I wouldn’t say he’s the best I’ve heard, but he maintains the rhythm well while also often leading songs too. His songs are very relaxing to listen to and will be enjoyed by jazz fans.
