Joe Hisaishi is one of Japan’s most high profile composer and directors. Born in Nagano under the name Mamoru Fujisawa, December 6, 1950, he has composed more than one hundred soundtracks and albums since 1981. He has worked on soundtracks with the famous animator, Hayao Miyazaki, and the famous film director, Takeshi Kitano, on their films Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2002), Hana-bi (1997) , and Kikujiro(1999) just to name a few.Joe discovered his love for music as a small child when he started the violin when he was five, eventually growing to attend a musical college. As the years went by, Hisaishi’s career started to look up. He started his solo career with small animations and set up his own record label, Wonder Land Inc, which produced his first album in New York titled Pretender. As he his works began to become more known, he chose the name Joe Hisaishi because he was inspired by African-American artist Quincy Jones (when you change it around to sound more Japanese, you get ‘Joe Kuishi’).
In 2004, he composed the score for Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. He also composed soundtrack for Welcome to Dongmakgol, a Korean movie, in 2005. His large fan base is in Korea due to Miyazaki’s films.
