I WiSH

i wish
  Vocals/Piano: Ai
  Piano: Nao

  Started: 2002
  Status: Disbanded

Profile

Coming from musical backgrounds, Nao and Ai first met in Shibuya, Japan. Ai had started playing the piano at the age of five. Her skills excelled greatly, giving her the opportunity to play at Carnegie hall in New York at the age of 10. Nao had also begun to play the piano at the age of five, and began to actively participate in music contests. At 17, he won the grand prix composition contest sponsored by Yamaha Motor Co, Ltd. So naturally, when Nao found Ai singing with a microphone on the street, it seemed only natural for them to work together.

They quickly created a demo tape and sent it off to music companies. Within only two months, I WiSH had recieved offers from over fifty music companies! I WiSH signed with SME Records.

I WiSH quickly became a hit with audiences. They made their major debut with "Door to Tomorrow", which was also featured as the theme for a Fuji TV drama. Reminiscent of Every Little Thing, with a fresh new style, the band continued to be quite successful after their debut. The single, "Kimi to Boku" was featured as the fourth ending song for SD Gundam. The band also released numerous albums.
January 30, 2005, I WiSH shocked their fans with an announcement that they were going to break up. Both Ai and Nao were thankful to have worked together, but admitted that each wanted to move in a different direction with their music. In response to their break up, SME has released several special versions of songs and a last album titled "Best Wishes".

Thoughts

I WiSH’s style was very reminiscent of Every Little Thing, with a new modern twist. Ai provided strong vocals, and together with Nao, they created some great instrumental backgrounds. It is quite a shame that they were so successful with their band and ended up disbanding. I think their success would have only continued to grow if they had not disbanded. Definitely check them out!
