Profile

Ichiyanagi Toshi is a well known composer in Japan. Born in 1933, Toshi gained an appreciation for music at a early age. At only 21 years of age, he composed his first major chamber work titled Sonata for violin and piano. Two years later, he married Yoko Ono but would later divorce her in 1963.

During his early years as a composer, he spent a lot of time composing chamber pieces; however, over time he began to explore other forms of music. Starting in the late 1960’s, Toshi began to compose orchestral works like The Field and Bridging. He also moved forward to create pieces for individual instruments, vocal works, electronic music, and pieces solely for Japanese instruments. In addition to this, he also created the film score for the movie Eros Plus Massacre and the theater peice Pratyaahaaraa!

Toshi’s skill has not been overlooked by music fans. He has won the Elizabeth Coolidge Prize, the Serge Koussevitzky Prize, the Nakajima Kenzo Award, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Government, the Kyoto Music Award, and the Otaka Prize for various works!
