Hiromi Uehara became immersed in music at the early age of 6, when she began to take her first piano lessons. Less than a year later, she was enrolled in the Yamaha School of Music. Her success with the piano quickly brought attention to her, and by the age of 12 she was performing in public. At 14, she had the honor of playing with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra!

Her talent was undeniable, and as she grew up, her taste in music expanded from classical to jazz. For several years, she spent time writing jingles for major companies like Nissan.

In 1999, she moved to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was here that she would meet Richard Evans and Ahmad Jamal, who later assisted her with her first album titled "Another Mind".

Finally in 2003, she made her major debut with her jazz album titled "Another Mind". The album sold 100,000 copies in Japan and also received the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s Jazz Album of the Year Award. The great response to her album, led her to release several others such as "Brain" and "Time Control". With the release of "Brain", Uehara won the Horizon Award, Swing Journal’s New Star Award, Jazz Life’s Gold Album, HMV Japan’s Best Japanese Jazz Album, and the Japan Music Pen Club’s Japanese Artist Award. The album was also named "album of the year" in Swing Journal’s 2005 Readers Poll. In addition to these awards, Hiromi Uehara has also won the Best Jazz Act at the Boston Music Awards, Guinness Jazz Festival’s Rising Star Award, Jazzman of the Year, and Pianist of the Year! She has a very impressive career and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon!

Thoughts

Hiromi Uehara is a very talented pianist and composer. Her music is a mix of beautiful classical and jazz inspired melodies. She also infuses a contemporary style that gives her music a modern feel. The complexity, and rhythm of her songs is quite amazing and is definitely worth listening to. I highly recommend this artist!
