HALFBY is the name that Kyoto resident artist Takahiro Takahashi uses when he DJs. Specializing not only in music but also having some skill in drawings and paintings as well, Takahashi ultimately decided to take his experience from working in a local record store and pursued his own DJ career under the moniker HALFBY. Signing onto the SECOND ROYAL RECORDS label and performing in local clubs around Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kobe, HALFBY released a few sold-out EPs his debut year and his first mini-album "HALF WORKS" actually was a real chart-topper in the indie scene when it was released in 2003. Focusing on a musical sound centered around breakbeats and hip hop but also including a bit of everything else, this unique combination of beats and styles left his choice in music very wide open.Soon, after releasing "HALF WORKS", HALFBY made a few famous remixes of famous Japanese artists such as m-flo, DOPING PANDA, and HALCALI. This attracted a bit of attention as the DJ was approached by famous Japanese director Katsuyuki Motohiro who offered him the opportunity to collaborate with Tatsuki Hashimoto on the soundtrack for the movie "Summertime Machine Blues". From this fame came the opportunity to play at huge rock festivals such as COUNTDOWN JAPAN ’05 and SUMMER SONIC ’05. It also led to the success of HALFBY’s first major album full-length album "GREEN HOURS", which was released in late-2005. The album was another chart-topper in the indie scene and received a lot of attention from music artists like Fantastic Plastic Machine and Yasuharu Konishi (formerly of Pizzicato Five).
Afterwards, HALFBY continued on his climb up the music scene. In the subsequent years, his label was picked up as a subsidiary of major label Toy’s Factory. He then went on to release a string of successful singles. Ultimately, this led up to the release of HALFBY’s first major album "SIDE FARMERS" in 2007.

HALFBY is very good. His remixes and music shows a lot of creativity. Many of his songs also have a very upbeat, cherry melody which is unique to him. Although he is mainly attracted to pop, reggae, and calipso beats, he does an excellent job remixing the songs. Check him out!Click to read/add your opinion!
