Profile

This band, Born and raised in 1967 is easily one of the oldest bands I have EVER heard play metal. There’s only one band that beats them, and they were formed one year earlier... and that’s Black Sabbath. Granted, there’s not much information on them, but I was able to obtain some of their music. Although the band split up, it’s best to know them as a metal band than hard rock simply because of the sheer avant-garde and progressive musical style you’d almost never hear in rock. That, and they simply do just play metal.

Flower Travellin’ Band, although the name may not sound very metal, was very popular outside of Japan and was horribly influencial on all doom metal around the world. The were originally "Flowers" and they released in 1969 an album called "Challenge".

Joe, Hideki Ishima, Joji Wada, and Jhun Kowzuki released their second album "Anywhere" as "Flower Travellin’ Band" in 1970. They truly shine as a metal band in 1971 when they released "Satori". "Made In Japan" was a mini album they created and distributed in 1972, and this is one of the easiest ways to spot their influences. I’ve seen this album name pop up dozens of times, and song names, too. Their last album, "Make Up", was in 1973. It’s so very easy for avid metal listeners to hear the influences in today’s metal from them, although everybody may find their music a bit strange. But strange is good! They are absolute proof that you don’t have to be "heavy" to be a metal band.

My Thoughts

Flower Travellin’ Band has a considerably different metal feel to them compared to other active bands right now. They often sing in English quite well. In addition, their music really has a 70’s feel to it. Its rather strange, kinda mystic, but really works for them. Although they are a old band, definitely check them out :)
