Profile
Dragon Ash first formed by lead singer Kenji. They symbolize a great deal of hip hop in Japan. They were one of the first to popularize hip hop in Japan. They brought western influences into their music such as reggae, rap, rap-rock, punk, Spanish, and R&B. They use various samples from American rock group The Smashing Pumpkins as well as the song Grateful Days as an opening for the show called Today.
The band made their live debut at the famous Club Citta venue in Kawasaki in August 1996, and signed with Victor Entertainment in 1997. Several mini albums and their debut album "Mustang" followed, which were moderately successful but didnt make a big splash.
The real break through came with a couple of maxi singles released together in May 1999. "I Love Hip Hop" speaks for itself, but the chart buster was the melodic "Grateful Days". The single reached No. 1 in the Oricon charts and remains their best-loved hit. They have found their groove and have matured into a Japanese version of the Beastie Boys or the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Thoughts
I found Dragon Ash to be a rather average hip hop band. There is not a lot of variety in their songs. Most of their songs infuse a mixture of reggae and hip hop, with rapping vocals. If their songs incorporated a little more creativity, Dragon Ash could become a great band.
