One of what some would consider Japan’s "real rock and roll" bands, BLANKEY JET CITY was a famous Japanese rock band that got its roots in the year of 1990 by appearing on the Japanese TV program "Ikaten". After appearing on that program, they were almost immediately signed onto a major label and the rest was history. The band’s leader Kenichi Asai brought a very distinctive vocal style to the band as well as being the major songwriter for the band. 10 years and a multitude of releases later, the band decided to split in the year 2000 as the members decided they wanted to pursue their own individual careers, playing their last show together at that year’s Fuji Rock Festival. The band continues to be very influential in the realm of Japanese rock music, even after breaking up. Also, as for the band members themselves, Asai went on to become the frontman for the bands Sherbets, Jude, and Ajico. Terui went on to join the band Rosso among other bands, and Nakamura has performed as a support drummer for various bands.

Thoughts

I have never been a big fan of Blankey Jet City. Their melodies aren’t bad, but what really turns me off is their vocalist, Kenichi. In my opinion, his voice is rather aweful and painful to listen to. With another vocalist, this band could have been so much better!
