Profile

A mix of new wave, electro-industrial and electro-pop, Black Phantom/Black Fantom formed in Tokyo around 2002. They state their influences to include: blacklovefantom Bowie, Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, BUCK-TICK and Soft Ballet. Black Fantom’s first live was in Shinjuku MARZ in February of that year and the rest of 2002 playing lives in Tokyo and Yokohama at venues such as Takadanobaba AREA, Y2K ROPPONGI and FOUR VALLEY.

In 2003 they became Black Love Fantom and continued touring various clubs, including the live [club cybernetics code:09] at Shibuya VUENOS in September, which Ryonai (BLAM HONEY/SUPPURATE SYSTEM) was a guest member for.

2004 also saw the band playing various lives in venues such as Shibuya EGG MAN, Otsuka RED ZONE and Kichijoji STAR PINE’S CAFE. In this year, their first single "Vinet", featuring RYONAI and remixed by SEN (COLD+SLEEP), was released on March 28th and sold out. Their second single, "gurasu no shiruetto" followed on November 6th, and this too sold out.

The single "darkness phobia" was distributed in January 2005 and was free to those who attended the Ikebukuro LIVE INN ROSA live and filled in a questionnaire. More touring then ensued, with lives at Oookayama peak-1, Shibuya club asia P and Shimo-Kitazawa MOSAiC, amongst others. Another free CD, "B.L.F" was also distributed during these lives.

Although the band played fewer lives in 2006, they remained active and on May 20th they released another single, "Icarus no kuroi tsubasa", which coincided with their first show of the year at Shibuya VEUNOS. They also released the CD "Orange" that was given out free to those who attended their lives.

Thoughts

Sometimes calm and slow, sometimes lively and fast, Black Love Fantom’s music has an interesting sound to it. Their vocalist, Isawo, has a somewhat unusual voice and at times reminds me of Peter Murphy of Bauhaus. That, of course, isn’t a bad thing though, and it helps to set them apart from other electronic bands.
