Atari Kousuke is a Japanese singer who was born on July 13, 1980 in Amami-Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. He sings in shima-uta’style and is currently signed under Epic Records. He was a fan of Hajime Chitose during high school and started training himself to sing in shima-uta style.

Kousuke won awards after participating in several folk singing competitions and released indies albums titled Atari in 1999 and Kurudando in 2000, under Jabara Records. He went on to release Shodon in 2002 and Notus in 2004. In September 2005, over 7000 copies of his mini album, Materia, were sold and ranked #5 in the indie charts.

Kousuke released Sore Zore ni on March 1, 2006 as his debut major single and it ranked #60 on the Oricon charts. He released his second single on June 28 titled Omoide no Sugu Soba de / Mahiru no Hanabi. It reached #50 on the charts and was used as Chakushin Ari Final theme song.

In 2007, he released his third single, Hana, on April 11. It was his highest ranking single and was ranked at #19 on the Oricon. He was featured in Music Station’s Young Guns for the month of May and performed the single. Three months after, he released his first major album titled, Yurai Bana, and it debut at # 7 on the weekly rankings. Another album, Hua Jian Dao, was released two days later.

His latest single was released on November 14, entitled Tane wo Maku Hibi.

Thoughts

I became his fan after watching him performed Hana on Music Station. This song became one of my favourites. His recent single, Tane wo Maku Hibi, is addictive too. I find his singing style unique and interesting since I don’t listen to much traditional Japanese songs. Try listening to him!
