Now well-known for their great live performances, Asparagus formed in 2002 consisting of Shinobu Watanabe (vocals + guitar, formerly in Captain Hedgehog), Junichiro Yamashita (bass) and Masakazu Ichise (drums, formerly in popcatcher). In October of that year they were included alongside artists such as Beat Crusaders, Reel Big Fish and Snuff, on the CD "Dive into Disney", which was released to celebrate Walt Disneys 100th birthday. Their first album, "Tiger Style", was then released in December through the independant label STACKERS.
Asparagus began 2003 by supporting Short Circuit on their 32 date tour "strange world, wandering mind" in January and played their first one man live at GIG-ANTIC in Shibuya in April.
In January 2004 the band appeared on the various artists PV collection ŗP3B Video 9903", which was released through Jellyfish Records. The band then also appeared on the various artists albums "Carry That Weight" and "multiply your bloodstone" in April. Proceeding the release of their second and third albums, "KAPPA I" and "KAPPA II", through Pizza of Death Records on June 16th, the band toured Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka in June.
Next up was "Space Shower Volume 40" at Shinjuku Loft in July, along with the bands Comeback My Daughters and Ocean Lane and the band also began their 29-date "KAPPA TOUR", which began in Yokohamas Club 24 on August 20th and ended with the Shibuya O-East one man. They then played yet more lives in October as the support act for Ken Yokoyamas "Going Down Tour" and supporting Set You Free on their "Kyushu Tour" in November.
2005 saw yet more lives for the band, beginning with a guest appearance at Back Drop Bomb and Husking Bees "ini showcase" event at Zepp Tokyo and ŗP3B Meeting in 6 Towns" in January. They then released the maxi single "Yes/No" in June, and also were the support band for the Beat Crusaders tour "Attack 2005". Asparagus remained busy by supporting The Band Aparts "smooth like butter" tour in July, Slime Ball and Wrong Scales tour in August and Beat Crusaders "Quiz Hunter 2005" tour in October.
Another support tour was on the cards for the band in March 2006as they participated in Ken Yokoyama, lostage, creamstock, Wrong Scale, he, the band apart and pulis tours. The band then played at "ROCK IN JAPAN FES. 2006" in August and were featured on the various artists CD "The Very Best of Pizza of Death" in September. In this month, they also performed at the Beat Crusaders event "BOYZ OF SUMMER 2006" and supported the tours of Slime Ball and the band apart.
In December, the band performed at the "Countdown Japan" live, after which it was announced that Junichiro Yamashita was to leave the band.
On January 17th 2007, Asparagus released the split mini-album "Night on the Planet" together with Beat Crusaders and began a 16 date tour of Japan, "Night on the Planetarium", on January 27th. A new member, Naou Hara (bass, formerly of Short Circuit) was also added at this time.

Thoughts
Asparagus is a high energy rock band. They have some great tunes that are fast paced and incorporate a lot of English lyrics. If you are a fan of bands like Beat Crusaders or Ellegarden, then I think you will enjoy this band a lot
