  Composer: Akio Yashiro

  Started: 1957
  Status: Died 1976

Profile

Akio Yashiro was born in 1929 in Tokyo. At the early age of 11 he was already taking composition lessons from Moroi Saburo, and later attended the Tokyo Music Academy (now known as Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music). During his time at school, he studied composition under Hashimoto Kunihiko, Ikeuchi Yujiro, and Ifukube Akira. In addition to this, he also studied piano under Toyomasu Noboru, Leonid Kreutzer, and Kawakami Kiyo.

After graduating, Akio traveled to Europe to study abroad. He learned more about composition and orchestration from Olivier Massiaen, Tony Oban, and Nadia Boulanger. In addition to his studies, he also composed "String Quartet", which he later won a music prize for in Japan.

Upon returning to Japan, he was selected to be the first commissioned composer of the Japan Philharmonic Series. In 1958, he finally conducted his first performance, which featured "Symphonie pour grande orchestre".

Over the years it became clear that Akio was a talented composer. He recieved the Sixteenth Otaka Prize and Twenty-first National Art Festival Award for his "Piano Concerto". His skills were also frequently requested to write music for movies, broadcasts, and stages. In 1968, he was welcomed back to his university as a assistant professor. Later he would be promoted to professor!

Unfortunately Akio’s career was cut short in 1976 when he died of heart failure.

Thoughts

Akio was a great composer who’s career was cut short. Although he did compose for other instruments, he is most well known today for his piano compositions. Each composition shows a mastery of technique, timing, and volume. Definitely check his music out!
