Akina Nakamori Vocals: Akina Nakamori Started: 1979 Status: Active ProfileA ballerina at age four, Japanese pop singer Akina Nakamori was born on July 13, 1965 in Kiyose, Tokyo, Japan. But by the age of six she made the decision to become a singer, even expressing her desires in a school essay.Although highly active in athletics, Akina got her first taste of being a singer at age 14 when she performed on the Japanese version of Star Search called Star Tanjo. After two years of losing her third appearance on the show was a charm and she became the first contestant to win the highest scores in all of the shows history. Her prize, a contract with Warner Pioneer and a trip to Los Angeles to record her debut single, Slow Motion which was released in May of 1982. Selling 420,000 copies, the song remained on the Top 10 for 39 straight weeks. A few months later, Prologue, her debut album was released in July. Finally official stardom was reached when her third single, Second Love reached number one. With appearances on TV shows such as Kohaku Uta Gassen, a popular New Years program and a movie role in the film, Aitabidachi with her also famous boyfriend and idol, Kondo Masahiko, Akina’s 1986 Desire single became her trademark. Her troubled love life being publicized and talks about her sudden weight loss were too much for her to handle and in July of 1989 a 23 year old Akina shocked the media and her fans when she attempted suicide at Kondo Masahiko’s home. Escaping the public eye, Akina went off to Hawaii where she dropped Warner Pioneer and started up her own management company. Dear Friend, her 1990 come back song recorded in New York sadly proved that she had lost the spark she once had. Including a drastic drop in her once, highly sold record sales.
But her successful past didn’t end in vein. Today Akina Nakamori is a household name, still well known by the same people who once and will always love her.
