In 1988, the All-Japan Tsugaru-Shamisen Competition, held at the Kanagicho, was won by Agatsuma who was 14! He began playing music when he six. And for two consecutive years, in 1995 and 1996, he was awarded the prestigious top prize in the Tsuguru-Shamisen National Competition.

Because of the high acclaim he received for his music in Hogaku (traditional Japanese music), he was inspired to continue exploring the unique qualities of the Tsugaru-Shamisen, which turned out to be his own musical speciality.

In 2001, his self-titled album "Agatsuma" received the award for Album of the Year at the Japan Gold Disc Awards.

Agatsuma is a very talented musician. His music is very traditional and has a beautiful flow to it. Some songs have a very sorrowful sound to them, and I like these the most! He also has a few upbeat, powerful songs as well. Please enjoy!
