Profile

Just like and often compared to Kate Bush and Bjork, one genre of music can not describe singer ACO. For she specializes in a wide range of genres such as pop, jazz, downtempo and electronica.

Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1977, ACO released her first moderatly successful pop style single, Fuan Nano in 1995. Kittenish Love, her first debut album soon followed in 1996. ACO was back in the studio towards the years end recording her second album NUDE with her well known jazz pop style. The album was released exactly one year after her first album.

During her first 2 years as an artist, ACO’s DROP, a hip hop elemental style mixed with her leisurely lyrics became her best known single.

By 1998 ACO began moving away from the sound that defined her. And with her third album, Lady Soul and her singles CATWALK and Yawarakai Hada, she introduced a more darker dramatic style.

The release of her fourth album Absolute Ego in the winter of 1999 was a turning point in ACO’s career. No longer being known for her teen pop idol songs, ACO took on a trip-hop/electronica style along with experimental vocals. The album was a hit and with it singles such as SPLEEN and Yorokobi Ni Saku Hana were produced. In 2000 Other Side Of Absolute Ego, a re-mix album was rleased featuring collaberations with DJ Krush, Tricky, and Yoshinori Sunahara. A DVD called Absolute Live was also released.

Her fifth electronic styled album Material released in 2001 contains ACO’s darkest music to date. Included, a haunting cover of Kate Bush’s, This Woman’s Work.

Her sixth album Irony followed in 2003. On it she collaberated with Icelandic electronica band, Mum and avant-garde artists, portable[k]ommunity. The album was minimalist electronica styled with layered vocals and delicate microbeats. It was compared to Bjorks, Vespertine. With this album one single titled Machi was released.

Mask, a mini album released in early 2006 explored a neo-electroclash sound. Including a recut of her first single Faun Nano which marked the songs tenth anniversary.

Recently ACO has worked with Taeji Sawai and his band Golden Pink Arrow. There work has not yet been released commercially.

Thoughts

Despite her success, I fail to see what is so special about ACO. Her genre of music seems to change with the wind, but her vocals are always high pitched and shrieky. She just totally turns me off.
