Another Fantastic Year for Electro

Date: 12/29/06
Writer: 1-5

The Electronic scene has always produced bands that are extremely active live-wise, as well as some fantastic collaborations and releases and 2006 was no exception to this.

Ali Project Ali Project, who are perhaps one of the most established and famous electro/synth pop bands, were very active over the year. The played numerous lives in Japan and released their "best of" album, "Deja Vu`THE ORIGINAL BEST 1992-1995`" in March. They didn’t stop there though, and also performed the OST to the anime series "Rozenmaiden Traumend", which is becoming increasingly popular both in Japan and overseas. And if that hadn’t kept them busy enough, they ended the year with their new album "Romance" and once again proved they’re not only extremely hard-working, but that they still make good music even after all this time.

And they weren’t the only ones to release some great new material. Hora and Kaya (both ex-Schwarz Stein) delighted their fans when they released a one-off CD together under the name "Another Cell". Although it sounded very like the songs they’d created together in Schwarz Stein, Kaya’s vocals had improved quite a lot and the production quality was excellent!

Hora also released his 3rd solo album, "Prominence", which was limited to just 500 copies. It was again another instrumental album, but had a more synth pop and ambient feel to it than his previous albums. It did seem like some of the songs, such as "EUPHORIA", had been written for Kaya’s vocals, but it was really great album regardless of that and Hora really seemed to grow as a composer on it.

Kaya Kaya too began his synth pop/aesthetic kei solo project by playing his first solo live and released the singles "Kaleidoscope", for which Kalm (ex-Velvet Eden) wrote the music, and "Masquerade". Kalm’s involvement in the single was great news for his fans as he’d been relatively musically inactive since he left Velvet Eden in 1999. Kaya then followed up the singles with the release of his first solo album, "Glitter" in December. Both fans and critics alike agreed that Kaya’s vocals had once again improved and his music was very well received, making 2006 a very good year for him.

Other good releases of the year included smaller electro-industrial band Despair’s 2nd mini-album "DESERTED TECHNOLOGY RIOT", "remix edit vol.1" from electro-industrial’s Destruct System, which included remixes by Rave Man (Aural Vampire), Rieu (Despair), Katsuyuki Fujita, and members of Carre, digi-rock band Amaterase’s "amashou hoshi shi" album, Floppy’s "Sine Wave Orchestra" album, electro-industrial/electro band Black Love Fantom’s "ikarasu no kuroi tsubasa" single, which was remixed by Custom Mummy Lee, synth pop band Syaranosui’s single "Nokohana" and Aural Vampire’s free, online only release, "Death Folder".

Seirenes In addition to some wonderful releases, 2006 also saw the club event Tokyo Decadence celebrate its first birthday and the celebratory event included performances from synth pop band Aural Vampire and operatic electro-industrial band Seirenes. There was also more good news for Kalm fans as Seirenes also collaborated with him at another Tokyo Decadence event and, although, he wasn’t present at the live, he wrote the music for them. Seirenes’ Sisen also began hosting the Web TV show "Gothic & Lolita Night", on which he had various guests including the other members of Seirenes and other electronic bands and appeared in one of Ali Project’s PVs.

Psydoll 2006 was also a great year for overseas lives. Electro-industrial band BAAL began their European tour "TERRITORY OF "B.A.A.L" and released a special version of their album "Junk Baptism #1 -Psycho Technology DJ’s Babylon-" during this, which was limited to 200 copies. Euthanasie also began a European tour and it was particularly special as it was their first. Psydoll didn’t tour Europe, but instead returned to the UK for their 2006 tour. Their loyal UK fanbase was glad to see them back once more and their lives, though small, were enjoyed by all who attended.

This year has definitely been an excellent year for Electronic music, with all the bands putting everything into their releases and live performances. If next year is even half as good, it will be amazing!
